About

Silent Flight Studios is run by Montana Steell, a Florida artists who makes bezel-set sterling silver jewelry with pieces of antique sea glass that she beachcombs throughout the Caribbean. She lives aboard a classic sloop-rigged sailboat that she uses to access remote beaches where she finds rare sea glass treasures dating back as early as the 1600s. Each piece of sea glass featured in her jewelry was found in Caribbean waters while swimming along shorelines down current of historic ports of trade. Montana then hand-builds a sterling silver setting for each piece using traditional silversmithing techniques. Most of her pieces are made aboard her sailboat Silent Flight, so she calls her company Silent Flight Studios.

Montana, a third-generation Floridian with strong ties to the Caribbean, has been a metalsmith for over 15 years and loves to bring the history and character of the region to life through her work. The artifacts that she uses showcase the seafaring history of trade and piracy in Florida and the Caribbean for her customers. Her jewelry also shines light onto the more subtle aspects of the daily lives of Florida’s first settlers through the sea glass artifacts they left behind (pieces of medicine bottles, inkwells, pottery, etc.) now set in sterling silver. When customers visit her booth, they learn about the history and technology behind the artifacts that Montana incorporates into her work in addition to the silversmithing techniques she employs while hand-building each piece.

Silent Flight Studio’s jewelry is truly unique because of the quality, vintage, and rarity of the real ocean-tumbled sea glass featured in their work. We share the legacy of historical coastal communities in Florida and the Caribbean with our customers as we describe each unique piece in our collection. We also recount our own stories of sailing and diving for treasure as we collect our antique sea glass along far-flung shorelines.

We are a couple committed to doing things that make us happy. We love to surf, sail, free dive, hike, explore new places, play music, tell stories, and generally live life to the fullest.

When we aren’t beachcombing, designing and making jewelry, or playing in the water, we work on projects in environmental education and conservation, nonprofit development, and keeping our boat afloat.

Silent Flight Studios began when we fell in love and made a commitment to a life of adventure together. We wanted our lives to be like an extended surf trip. Our jewelry is inspired by the autonomy of sailing out of the sight of land, climbing mountains and forging rivers in some of the planet’s last wildernesses, and free diving amongst abundant marine life. It’s all the product of our adventures.
