Production Practices

Use Only Organic Materials Permaculture Design

Creative Farming LLC provides vegetable and plant-starts that are organically grown which means these products will show signs of bug-bites and other imperfections that commercial growing methods prevent. When you see “perfect” vegetables, you can almost guarantee that pesticides, herbicides, or other non-organic preservation and ripening techniques were used.
We use traditional organic growing methods which may produce lower yields but create healthier and better tasting produce. Our produce is fresh picked from the garden and ripened naturally. We do not use pesticides but instead use natural methods such as diatomaceous earth (the main ingredient in baking soda) to deter insects. We do not use synthetic nitrogen fertilizers and rely instead on organic sources of “green manure” such as composted vegetable and farm animal waste. Additionally, we leverage a variety of growing techniques that are based on sustainability such as hügelkultur gardening, traditional raised vegetable beds, hoop gardening, container gardening, and integrating herbs into landscaping. All our plants are grown outdoors (no green-house gardening), leveraging natural sunshine and the rain that falls supplemented with rain-barrel water as needed. Weeds are controlled “the old-fashioned way” with no herbicides and via mechanical walk-behind tillers and a significant amount of hand-weeding and hoeing. The garden is located on ~1 acre of land located Southwest of Kokomo and is entirely maintained by the owners, Keith & Angela.
Hand-crafted products are all designed and created by Angela. These items are beautiful, simple, useful, and unique. Hand-sewn items, jewelry and accessories are generated from cloth, beads, and materials largely sourced from local merchants and often incorporate reused items. Products are geared toward environmental sustainability by discouraging the creation of waste, facilitate personal health and hygiene, and encourage community since many items are for use in home meal preparation and entertainment.

Manager

Keith & Angela Peterson Farm
Owners Keith and Angela Peterson have lived and worked in the Kokomo community since relocating from Minnesota in 1990. Both grew up in agricultural homes where farming, gardening, and creation of personal hand-made products were essential to daily life. Their love of the outdoors, growing and trying new vegetables, the desire to create hand-made items, and the commitment to encourage community gathering and sharing of ideas are the drivers that resulted in Creative Farming LLC.
