Free Meals

In 1977 a group of Yale students and their spouses decided to do something to help their homeless neighbors in New Haven, and the Community Soup Kitchen was founded.
Our guests include the homeless, the elderly, the mentally ill, chronic substance abusers, those living with HIV and AIDS, those on welfare, the working poor, single parents, veterans and the lonely. They reflect the diversity of the greater New Haven area.
We offer lunch Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays and breakfast Saturdays in our dining room at Christ Church. We provide food, paper goods, and supplies to our satellite breakfast programs at St. Luke’s Church, St. Martin DePorres Church, and St. Paul’s Union AME Church. We also provide all these supplies and a cook to St. Luke’s twice-weekly Lunch for Women and Children. April through October, we cover the annual shutdown of the Wednesday lunch program at St. Thomas More Church by serving sandwiches with a snack and drink out of a radio flyer wagon on the New Haven Green. Altogether we provided 74,417 meals in 2018.
We believe having a cheerful, clean, safe, reliable place to eat is not a privilege but a human right.
