About

Rural Squirrel reflects our family's life on a small farm in Fauquier County, Virginia. Our line of candles and fragrances incorporates soy wax with select pure plant-based essential oils to create the warmth and timeliness of the rolling hills of the Virginia Piedmont. We take our inspiration from the beauty of this place and hope that when you light a Rural Squirrel candle it will bring you the peace we feel here.

In addition to pouring into travel tins and amber glass jars, Rural Squirrel creates candles using vintage china and pottery that we curate from thrift stores. Our vintage collection offers unique one-of-a-kind gifts.

Rural Squirrel is committed to using all natural ingredients, including botanical based essential oils that provide aromatherapy benefits. Our candles are hand poured at our home using sustainable plant based waxes, including soy and soy/coconut blends for a clean burn providing a non-toxic aroma space in your home and in ours.

Production Practices

We make all of our candles ourselves in our home studio in Fauquier County, Va. Our candles use pure soy wax from US farmed soybeans. Rural Squirrel Candles contain no dyes or synthetic chemicals. We scent our candles using only plant-based essential oils blended into melted soy wax at the precise flash point temperature of each essential oil to ensure that the oils are bonded to the wax. This prevents loss of scent over time. Our candle scents remain strong for over a year. Once blended we wait till the blend cools to 109F and then pour into containers that have been wicked. Correct wick sizing is critical to a clean burn and a complete melt across the entire container. We use only 100% cotton wicks. After allowing the candles to cure for 24 hours we trim the wicks and cover tops. We are committed to recycling packaging materials and re-purposing vintage china and pottery as candle containers.

In 1979 my wife and I bought a Civil War period farmhouse in Fauquier County, Virginia. Over the years we went from wood heat to central, added some acreage with a small orchard and raised two daughters and many pets. We are still living on the farm and after long careers in the social services have launched Rural Squirrel to give our creative instincts an opportunity to share our love for country living. We use a blend of natural ingredients to recreate the warmth and serenity of rural living.
