About

Featherfin Family Services is a newly-formed, mission-first business offering nature-based family services. Our mission is to increase family and community joy, connection, and knowledge through nature-based programs. Our gatherings provide families opportunities to play, learn, and bond, and we strive to connect to nature and ourselves through curiosity and a willingness to wonder. We aim to center our work in our local community as much as possible, offering our abilities to our neighbors and accepting their gifts in return.

Current Offerings Include:

1) "Tinkergarten" - Tinkergarten nature play classes help families get outside to make the most of their kids’ early learning years. Through live, weekly sessions, an at-home curriculum, and a rich learning community, Tinkergarten makes purposeful outdoor play doable for every family. For children aged 2 to 8 and their caregivers.

2) "Nature Nuggets" - These free Community Nature Pop-Ups offer simple, hands-on activities at local community events and gathering places. All activities can be completed in 15 minutes or less, so feel free to swing by to give your child a small slice of nature learning and play. For families and children of all ages.

COMING in 2023!

1) "Kid's Moon Club" - Connect more deeply with nature's rhythms and the changing seasons during these joyful monthly full-moon celebrations for children aged 4 to 10 and their caregivers. Each gathering includes songs, stories, hand-on art explorations, snacks, and fun!

2) "Rural and Rustic Makers" - For most modern children, distractions are up and attention spans are down. Rural and Rustic Makers guides children in strengthening their focus, perserverance, and technical skills through loved primitive maker projects. From building water wheels to foraging for berries and making natural dyes, kids will have fun and find pride in their creations.

3) "Crickhollow Fam Camp" - Immerse yourself in nature at Crickhollow - our family friendly property! Camp in the forest, get messy at the Mud Kitchen, touch and smell your way along the Sensory Scavenger Hunt Trail, enjoy a story along the Tales Trail, and more! Add-ons include a family movie under the stars, kid-friendly participatory campfire cooking, and morning visits from Windy the Forest Fairy!

4) "Wandering and Wondering in Central Virginia" - Join us for quirky and lighthearted virtual visits to some of the most beautiful, unique, and interesting outdoor spots in Va! Subscribe to this digital series of casual and curious family-friendly storytimes, nature demonstrations, and chats with local nature loving folks like you! Kim McCray
I am a former museum director and children's librarian turned nature play educator and nature therapy guide. I love many things, especially rural living, river floats, good music, cooking, and cats. I believe strongly that the natural environment offers the most supportive setting for learning and growth for both children and adults, and has a robust role to play in many aspects of child development and family health. Nature can both stimulate and soothe as needed, and is a counter to our frenzied and isolated modern lifestyles. I am passionate about increasing the opportunities for children and caregivers to connect with the natural world and to one another, and cannot wait to connect with you and see how Featherfin Family Services can support your family's journey.
