Oak Heart Flower Farm
Farmer
Hi i'm Roxanne and i am a cut flower farmer! I started my business last year after retiring from nursing after 40+ years. Growing veges and flowers from seeds has been a hobby of mine and a pleasure to do. I wanted to continue working doing something that i love and to share with others, and flowers fit the bill! It has been a learning process to "farm flowers" and a lot of fun seeing the process change and grow. I sold at 3 farmers markets with fairly good success so wanted to continue with a bigger market at Cedar Rapids downtown.
Extended Growing Season Perennial Crops
i start in Jan/Feb with seed starting winter sowing, through march. i also start seeds inside under heat/ grow lights. i have a unheated hoop house i will start early flowers in. i will be trying to set up small hoops with row covers to plant some of my cool flowers in April. I have several perennial beds i have grown for 30+ years that i can use for bouquets also. We have an acerage with a century home in northern Linn county that previously had cattle and hogs where the garden area is now, so naturally the soil is very good. I ammend with compost and horse manure from a neighbor. I use organic practices as much as possible.
