About

Honker’s Farm’s Origins
Honker's Farm·Saturday, April 18, 2020·
It all started in 2015 when a small group of friends, some of whom had already been testing the backyard chicken waters, moved from just raising chickens for eggs to trying our hand at meat birds. Turkeys and ducks followed and when an opportunity to grow out feeder pigs on a friends farm was offered we dove in head first and came out with three sows and a boar. Now into Pig Husbantry and wanting to expand, we contacted Travis Malloy, owner of Trailbale Farm, about the possibility of leasing low lying muck swamp adjacent to Trailbale, to which he agreed. The pigs and the land were a perfect match, clearing and rooting out invasive plants and allowing the soil to dry and create grass pasture for chickens, ducks and geese to enjoy grazing upon. Now going into our third season here, our growing knowledge, livestock inventory, and infrastructure is graduating from a hobby into a business we are very proud of.
Why are we doing this? Not just an aversion to the commercial meat industry. Knowing where our product comes from and that our animals have the best lives makes a difference! Animals raised on a rotating pasture have a quality of life and therefore nutrition and taste vastly superior to animals reared in Intensive Commercial Agriculture.
We continue to grow our Livestock Inventory and customer base focusing on consignments for Chicken, Jumbo Pekin Duck, Half and Whole Hog Grow Outs, 75 to 125 lbs BBQ pigs and eventually Retail Pork Cuts as well as Chicken Eggs and Duck Eggs depending upon availability. Our feed is locally milled from Swann’s Feed and we currently use Williams Custom Cutting as our butcher.
We feel very blessed to be doing something that we love and providing a service people enjoy and appreciate. Most thanks to our family and friends for the support and encouragement through the years. Special Thank You to our Parent Farm - Trailbale Farm and Travis for having us.

Production Practices

Pastured

Pork products are reared on pasture utilizing electric fence to facilitate mobile pens to allow the animals fresh pasture. Ducks and Geese are on the same system. Layer chickens are cooped at night for security but enjoy complete freedom during the day.
