About

Grateful Gardeners is an organic, sustainable, local cut flower farm located in Boyds, MD. Our principles, which we will always prioritize over profit, involve giving back to our earth, our community, and to ourselves. We believe strongly in the power of collaboration and educating people on the appeal of flowers and nature in general. Our mission is to provide seasonal, organic, and locally grown flowers to the DC, Maryland, and Virginia region that last longer, are competitively priced, easy to order, and reduce the environmental impact. Grateful Gardeners is a woman owned business, comprised of Sarah Daken, President, CEO, and Co-founder. Tom Precht is the VP, COO, and Co-founder. We are professionals, having worked in the legal field and scientific industry for several years. We’ve become disenchanted with our corporate jobs and wish to get back to what makes us truly happy; growing beautiful plants.

Manager

Tom Precht and Sarah Daken
Sarah has been a practicing attorney for 22 years. Her legal career has focused on litigation in areas of child abuse and neglect and police misconduct. A chance encounter with a flower farming instructional video a few years ago transformed her life. She had no idea at that time that she would soon desire to make a monumental career pivot to full time flower farming. Sarah advances and refines her ability to grow flowers through education, hands-on experience, and regular mentorship with seasoned flower growers. She brings her legal and business savvy to Grateful Gardeners through the creation of contracts for service, marketing strategies, and financial management. Her strongest attribute is her commitment to collaborative and meaningful relationships with customers, as well as her passion for fostering change in the floral industry. Tom has been research scientist for a majority of his career. He obtained a Ph.D. in Neuroscience from the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center in Denver, CO in 2008, where he studied the cell death mechanisms underlying Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s Disease. Tom’s Mother, Diana Precht, has been a lifelong gardener and avid Dahlia grower/enthusiast. Tom had no idea that he would one day follow in her footsteps to become a full-time flower farmer with his wife, Sarah. Tom brings a scientific, technological, and innovative aptitude to Grateful Gardeners, focusing on constantly improving their organic practices and sustainability. Like Sarah, he strives to operate a farming business that prioritizes relationships, collaboration, and community over profits. Ultimately, he believes in the theory of Biophilia; that human beings have an innate instinct to connect with nature and that their health and well being is dependent on this connection.
