About

J. A. Heneghan Family Farms is a small scale farm nestled in the beautiful Hudson Valley. We are committed to growing quality produce using responsible techniques in an intensive, high bed rotation approach. We cultivate one acre of land using only organic techniques, never spraying pesticides or herbicides. We integrate a flock of laying hens into our farm, rotating them through pasture allowing them to forage through fresh grass and return fertility to our soil Our goal is to produce healthy, wholesome food for our families and community while maintaining a healthy, rich lifestyle for ourselves. The farm produces over 20 varieties of seasonal vegetables and pasture raised eggs.

Our farm also works closely with the grass fed beef operation Heneghan Farm run by family members. We farm on the same piece of of land and share many resources. Although we are separate business entities we have sold beef for them in the past at farmers markets. We would love the opportunity to bring grass fed beef to your market as well.

Production Practices

Free Range Non Gmo Crop Rotation Low Till

While the farm is not certified organic, we practice organic methods. Never spraying pesticides or herbicides. We cultivate 1 acre of land with bio-intensive practices to produce over 20 varieties of vegetables. Sustainability being our long term goal. In order to produce large quantities on a small piece of land long term we prioritize a focus on soil health by adding compost, using low-till methods, and planting cover crops. Growing so intensively forces us to farm by hand using many tools such as the broad-fork, walk-behind-seeder, hoe, and the like.
Our free-range hens are on a field rotation system that allows them to always have access to fresh pasture and us to have access to the healthiest, most nutritious eggs. At times we use our hens for pest control by having them graze in areas with our vegetables to control insect infestations. We also collected the chicken manure to enrich our compost pile.

Manager

Moriah Heneghan
My name is Moriah, I am 24 years old and I manage J. A. Heneghan Family Farms. Making the choice to begin farming three years ago has proven to be one of the most rewarding moves I have made in my life. Farming allows me to directly impact my community for the better while providing myself with a lifestyle that is healthy not just for my physical body but for who I am as a whole.
I could never do this on my own. The support of my family and friends has allowed me to walk out this dream. If you stop by the farm or our market stand during the week you can often find one of my siblings/close friends beside me playing a vital roll in ensuring the farm succeeds.
